THE MUSINGS OF C.K. VOLNEK

Hi Lawna. Thanks for having me on your blog today. You have to be as excited as I am with your new release of Impossible to Hold coming out on the 19th. Can’t wait to host your book on my blog on the 19th. Yay.

I thought I would do a lighter post today, celebrating my new tween book, A Horse Called Trouble. And while I’m in the celebrating mode, I would like to offer one reader who leaves me a comment, a FREE e-copy of A Horse Called Trouble. (I hope you love free stuff as much as I do!)

There was a time when I was a second grader when all I wanted to do was draw bunnies. Bunnies eating, bunnies sleeping, hopping, smiling. Why? Because of a book. The Velveteen Rabbit.

Then my passion matured to horse stories. I read all the Black Stallion books, Black Beauty, Misty, etc., reading so many books I won the coveted reader award at our local library.

And today, my passion for middle-grade, tween and young adult fiction is still strong. I love a good story that weaves around a young protagonist, watching him or her grow, whether it be emotionally, in maturity, or humanity.

A Horse Called Trouble

Abandoned by her mother at a young age, Tara Cummings has been passed from foster home to foster home; not wanted anywhere by anyone. At thirteen she’s skeptic and suspicious, with no family, and no friends.

Horse therapy “will teach trust, perseverance, respect, and the value of teamwork,” or so says the program’s instructor. Tara is unconvinced. Trust only broke her heart, perseverance meant more failures, and no one respects or wants to team up with the misfit foster kid.

At the farm, Tara meets Trouble, an angry and defiant horse, bent on destroying everything and everyone around him. Tara is frightened of the enraged horse, until she realizes Trouble is as misunderstood and untrusting as she is. Pushing aside her fear, a special bond is formed, much to the surprise of everyone at the farm. Trouble trusts Tara, and Tara in turn finds hope and acceptance as well as the will to love and trust again herself.

But, Tara’s confidence is shaken as an even greater challenge looms ahead. Trouble’s mean and manipulative owner is the one and only Alissa, Tara’s nemesis.

Can Tara overcome her own limitations and fight to save the horse who freed her heart and gave her life value and meaning? Or will Alissa destroy them both?

Thanks so much for having me today. I’d love to have my readers contact me!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope to see you all soon. Don’t forget to leave me a comment for your chance to win a FREE e-copy of A Horse Called Trouble.

Your story sounds wonderful. i too have always been fascinated by horses. When I was a child, i read all of the My Friend Flicka series, not to mention the terribly Brit pony club tales. I longed for a pony of my own but growing up in Glasgow, it was a tad difficult so I had to be content with a once a week riding lesson which I paid for out of saved lunch money. My fave tv series was Champion the Wonder Horse. Do you want a funny story? Remember the children’s craze of the spacehooper? I had one called Thunder. I used to dress up in my jodhpurs and hard hat and ‘ride’ him down the busy Glasgow road. As you can imagine, I got some pretty strange looks. Interestingly, in my recently completed saga, I too have a troubled misunderstood horse who bonds with a lonely 14 year old. What is it about horses and young girls? Good luck with this. I am sure you achieve the success you deserve.

    Hi Viviane,

thanks for stopping by. What a great story about Thunder! lol. I too did some really funny things with my pretend horses. Then I was lucky enough to get my very own. I’ll never forget every one of them! You should plug your book, would love to read it.

and thanks so much to Lawna for hosting me today! You are such a gracious hostess!
